Ironically for a story about trivia, Quiz is built around an unanswerable question. Charles and Diana Ingram and Tecwen Whittock were found guilty of cheating, but still maintain their innocence, and it’s likely nobody but them will ever know the full truth. And just in case we were still in any doubt about how thoroughly the makers of Quiz have embraced this ambiguity, the finale ends with an imaginary Chris Tarrant breaking the fourth wall to echo our collective thoughts: “So, come on then. What’s the answer, after all that? Tell us. It’s killing me.”

Quiz Viewers Praise Helen McCrory’s Performance as Barrister

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Cheating Scandal

Viewers have praised Helen McCrory’s performance as a defense barrister in ITV drama Quiz, with one joking the actress “could tell me the Earth is flat and I would be convinced”. Quiz tells the story of the infamous Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? cheating scandal, in which an Army major and his wife were accused of using an elaborate coughing trick to win the cash prize. Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen played Charles Ingram, while Fleabag’s Sian Clifford starred as his wife, Diana. Michael Sheen transformed into host Chris Tarrant. The third and final part aired on Wednesday, with viewers watching the couple stand trial charged with deception while McCrory played their defense barrister, Sonia Woodley QC.

While the Ingrams were eventually convicted, serious doubts persists over their guilt and Quiz viewers said McCrory’s performance had convinced them a miscarriage of justice had taken place following the 2003 trial.

Helen McCrory has revealed she thinks its possible the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? convicted quiz cheats could be innocent.

The actress, 51, who stars in the show Quiz based on the case, said there are still unanswered questions about Major Charles Ingram who won the show in 2001 after Tecwen Whittock coughed if he said a right answer.

Speaking to The Mirror, Helen said: ‘The fact that a lot of people at the time didn’t hear the cough… Chris Tarrant didn’t hear the cough, the person sitting opposite didn’t hear the cough, people either side didn’t hear the cough, yet for some reason he [Charles Ingram] heard the cough – really?’

Actress McCrory revealed she thinks the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? cheats could be innocent and said there were unanswered questions

While she concedes it could have been a set up, Helen, who plays Sonia Woodley QC, the lawyer who defended the Ingrams’ case, admitted she also thinks its possible Ingram was innocent.
