BBC Media Centre: Interview with Helen McCrory

Helen McCrory Plays Dawn Ellison in Roadkill

by Staff  | BBC Media Centre | October 7, 2020

Dawn’s problem with Peter is that she doesn’t recognise him, and because she doesn’t recognise him, she doesn’t realise how dangerous he is.

What attracted you to the role?
I knew David Hare’s work very well. When I came out of drama school and first worked at The National Theatre I saw Racing Demon and Murmuring Judges, he was doing a triple bill there at the time. I’ve seen his work but I’d never seen him write about right-wing politics and I think that has brought another edge to his work, which is so blunt, brutal, funny and scathing. It has a sharpness that I really enjoyed when I read it. All the characters are pretty venal, but they’re quick and they’re bright and they’re ambitious. They’re also honest and I think that that is a very interesting story to watch.

VIDEO: Roadkill Official Trailer

A first look at the BBC’s new political trailer

BBC One has released a first look image of Hugh Laurie (The Night Manager, House) in Roadkill, a major new political thriller created by David Hare. Peter Laurence (Hugh Laurie) is a self-made, forceful and charismatic politician. Peter’s public and private life seems to be falling apart – or rather is being picked apart by his enemies. As the personal revelations spiral, he is shamelessly untroubled by guilt or remorse, expertly walking a high wire between glory and catastrophe as he seeks to further his own agenda whilst others plot to bring him down. However events show just how hard it is, for both an individual and a country, to leave the past behind. With enemies so close to home, can Peter Laurence ever out-run his own secrets to win the ultimate prize?

Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory Show Their Musical Side at Their Friends’ Registry Office Wedding

The Wedding Singers

Damian Lewis showcased his musical side as he pulled out a guitar to perform at his friends’ wedding, held at Kensington and Chelsea Register Office in London on Thursday.

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star, 49, was joined by his actress wife Helen McCrory, 52, as they celebrated the occasion by singing along to a series of classic Irish tracks.

As ceremonies and receptions in England set to be capped at 15 people from Monday, the screen stars’ pals were able to narrowly avoid the new restrictions as they marked their milestone with their loved ones.

The Band of Brothers star put on a dapper display as he was dressed in a dark blue suit, teamed with a white shirt and a patterned tie.

Peaky Blinders’ Helen, meanwhile, cut a sophisticated figure in a polka dot blouse, high-waisted trousers and a wool coat.

The mother-of-two’s right arm was held up in a sling, nearly a year after she used a scarf to support the same limb during a night out. MailOnline has contacted Helen’s representatives for further comment.

Helen Dishes About Her Better Half

by Gingersnap | damian-lewis.com | June 28, 2020

Helen McCrory OBE is one of the most versatile and critically acclaimed actresses working today. On screen she has played Anna Karenina, Cherie Blair (twice), Harry Potter‘s Narcissa Malfoy and the Peaky Blinders matriarch Aunt Polly. Her theatre roles range from Yelena in Uncle Vanya to Euripides‘ Medea.

A diplomat’s daughter, she spent her early childhood in Africa before continuing her education in the UK. After a bruising and unsuccessful audition at the Drama Centre in London – she was instructed to find out more about life before learning to act – she travelled to Italy where she discovered art and love and came back to try again. This time she passed the audition.

In 1993 she made her mark in Richard Eyre’s production of Trelawny of the Wells at the National Theatre and went on to perform leading roles on some of London’s most prestigious stages, winning two Olivier Award nominations. She was awarded an OBE for services to drama in 2017.

She met her husband, fellow actor Damian Lewis, when they both starred in a play called Five Gold Rings. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic Helen and Damian, together with the comedian Matt Lucas, co-founded the Feed NHS campaign which raises money to provide hot meals to frontline NHS workers.
