Quite the casting coup, to secure Richard Gere for the latest BBC drama.

The American actor has true Hollywood star status through roles in films including Pretty Woman, An American Gigolo and Primal Fear. Usually, we’re rooting for him, the silver fox with the undeniable charm. It’s refreshing, then, to find him tackling less familiar territory at the centre of a thriller where we may get a glimpse of what could be sharp fangs beneath his kilowatt smile.

Gere is Max, an American media mogul who owns newspapers and TV channels across the globe, including The National Reporter in the UK, where his son, Caden, is editor. When your primary asset is information, you hold remarkable influence, and with the UK on the verge of a general election, Max flies to London to weigh up his options. His decision comes down to more than putting a cross beside a name: the person he anoints, the one he blesses with positive coverage and exposure, could be the one to lead the country.

Helen McCrory Spills the Beans About Her New TV Character

Helen McCrory plays Kathryn in MotherFatherSon.

Tell us about Kathryn

Kathryn Villiers is a wealthy, educated English woman. Heir to a newspaper which her family has owned for generations – a broadsheet, which prides itself in the quality of its journalism. Her parents are distant and cold, perhaps because that is the way they were brought up; perhaps for another darker reason which she discovers in our story. She is expected to marry well, look after her inheritance and her husband, and continue on in her mother’s footsteps, but she’s rebelled. She becomes a journalist herself and on an assignment falls in love with an American steel magnet, who she can’t help noticing has more than a passing resemblance to Richard Gere!

BBC Media Centre: Interview with Helen McCrory – Peaky Blinders Series 3

Helen McCrory plays Aunt Polly Gray

Polly watches the family and can see who is coping in this new world and who is not. The situation becomes very much sink or swim, with Polly definitely swimming.

— Helen McCrory

Where did we leave off with Polly in series two and how do we find her in series three?
We left Polly in series two having been reunited with the son that had been taken from her when he was young. She understandably feels hugely guilty about her past and wants to defend him with everything she has. Campbell (played by Sam Neill) sees this weakness in her and uses it to humiliate her, and she compromises herself in order to save her son. Polly is further humiliated by the fact that her son and everyone else knows what she has done and so she does what Peaky Blinders do, and she kills Campbell.

How does Polly reconcile her actions in series two with her conscience?
At the beginning of the third series you find a woman that, as a Catholic, is damned as a murderer. This series explores what happens to Polly’s soul and her mind as she carries the knowledge that she has killed a man. It is interesting to see how she battles with her conscience while still being part of this world that continues to be involved in killing.

Happy 25th Birthday BBC Films

Damian Lewis at the BBC Films' 25th Anniversary Reception

Yesterday was a difficult day for the BBC, but as the fallout from the decision to drop Jeremy Clarkson rumbled on, director-general Tony Hall was joined by a host of famous faces for BBC Films’ 25th birthday bash.

The film-making arm of the Corporation was celebrating two and a half decades of producing features including Truly Madly Deeply, Billy Elliot, An Education, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa and last year’s Pride.

Christine Langan – head of BBC Films – welcomed the likes of Andrew Scott, Alan Rickman, Damian Lewis and wife Helen McCrory, Louis Theroux, James Nesbitt, Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter to last night’s star-studded celebration at New Broadcasting House.

The anniversary marks a big year for the BBC’s film division, which picked up a special Bafta for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema at this year’s ceremony to mark its two and a half decades “at the forefront of British independent filmmaking in the UK”.

Last night’s celebrations coincided with the announcement that Veep and The Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci is working on a feature film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield, and Rafe Spall will take the lead in BBC Films’ Swallows and Amazons.
