Helen McCrory and Damian Lewis to Co-Host the Evening Standard Theatre Awards

The 65th Annual Evening Standard Theatre Awards

by Robert Dex | Evening Standard | October 7, 2019

The Good Fight star Cush Jumbo will present this year’s opening ceremony of the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

She will join the newspaper’s proprietor, Evgeny Lebedev, and his regular co-host, American Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour, at West End’s London Coliseum on November 24. Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory will join Jumbo as co-hosts in recognizing some of the most exciting talents currently working in theatre.

Husband-and-wife acting stars Lewis and McCrory, who met when cast in a play together at the Almeida, are mainstays of the London stage. They are also known for hit TV shows Billions and Peaky Blinders.

Mr. Lebedev said: “For its 65th year, the Evening Standard Theatre Awards continues to recognize and celebrate London’s extraordinary talent from playwrights, directors and actors to everyone who works so hard behind the scenes.

“With the London Coliseum providing the new backdrop for the ceremony, it is a great pleasure that I will be hosting the event with Anna, Cush, Damian and Helen.”

Dame Anna said: “London’s theatre scene continues to thrive, and I am so thrilled to be co-hosting the Evening Standard Theatre Awards again with Evgeny, Cush, Damian and Helen celebrating the talent for their outstanding achievements in London theatre”.

Helen always finds time for charity. She is the very dedicated patron of Sir Hubert Von Herkomer Arts Foundation that works hard for disadvantaged inner city children to have access to creative industries through courses in photography, documentary film-making, art and fashion. The foundation is dedicated to ensuring that every child is given a chance to connect with and express their inner artist in a time when funding for the arts are squeezed out of the mainstream curriculum.

Helen McCrory: ‘ I don’t think I’m deep enough to have mental-health issues’

On Badass Women and Being Married to Her ‘Best Friend’

by Gavanndra Hodge | The Telegraph | August 9, 2019

She’s straight-talking, hates housework, dresses to kill, and lives life her way – convention be damned. Turns out Helen McCrory has plenty in common with her badass Peaky Blinders character Polly.

Helen McCrory, the multiple-award winning actor, is holding what looks like a moist slice of turkey. ‘What is that?’ I ask. ‘It’s a face mask, darling. £1.99 from Superdrug,’ she says, rubbing it against her neck. ‘It’s going to make me look like a teenager.’

We are standing outside a café on the Regent’s Canal, cyclists and prams whizzing by. McCrory is wearing a floral tea dress, silver Zadig & Voltaire boots, sunglasses and a VIP wristband from a Bob Dylan concert she went to, five days ago. ‘I am never taking it off,’ she says.

There is a sort of rock-star swagger to Helen McCrory, 50, a charismatic, don’t-give-a-damn cool with her chipped red nails and posh-voiced sweariness. She likes to party, to wear top hats and vintage frocks, and there is the inevitable doubling of glamour that comes from her marriage to the actor Damian Lewis (Brody from Homeland, more recently Bobby Axelrod in Billions), with whom she lives in a tall, narrow house in Tufnell Park with their children Manon, 12, and Gulliver, 11.
