Helen and Damian at Letters Live 2018

Celebrating Women and the Written Word

by Gingersnap4Helen | helen-mccrory.com | March 8, 2018

Today was International Womens Day and what better way to celebrate than at the Letters Live event? Letters Live is a celebration of the enduring power of literary correspondence. They organize live events where remarkable letters are read by a diverse array of outstanding performers. And today’s event was no exception, as the audience was treated to captivating readings by Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory, Kristin Scott Thomas, Benedict Cumberbatch, Gina Miller, Sophie Hunter, Amanda Abbington, Mariella Frostrup, Louise Brealey and more.  Damian was the surprise second half guest since Benedict Cumberbatch read in the first half.  One fan writes, “Helen read an incredibly moving excerpt from Lucitania.”

On March 7, 8 and 9 of 2018, Letters Live returned to London’s iconic Union Chapel to once again bring letters to life. Over the course of these three unique evenings, a diverse array of world-class performers from the stage, screen, music, art and literary worlds took to the pulpit and breathed life into correspondence from all walks of life, taking the audience on an emotional and unforgettable journey through time.

Since 2013, Letters Live has moved audiences to both laughter and tears by celebrating the pain, joy and wisdom preserved in letters written throughout the ages, expertly brought to life by an ever-changing cast of some of the most acclaimed performing talent from around the world.

There are a lot of reasons why we’re fans of Helen McCrory – her talent as an actress, her wit and her honesty – but one that gets less recognition is her dedication to giving back. In her role as Patron of the Sir Hubert Von Herkomer Arts Foundation, Helen is devoted to helping provide children with a gateway to the arts, which is why this weekend she joined Savoy Executive Chef Ludwig Hely and Debbi Clark, CEO of the Sir Hubert Von Herkomer Arts Foundation, as they delivered a chocolate and cake decorating masterclass to children supported by the Foundation.

What does 1920s Birmingham gangster drama Peaky Blinders and an American western have in common?

More than you might think, according to Tufnell Park actress Helen McCrory, who’s back on our screens as the hard-as-nails Aunt Polly in the third series of the hit BBC show.

“Something that the Americans have understood is that they have mythologised their people.

“A bunch of cow herders going across the west are turned by John Wayne into a western. The gangster by [Martin] Scorsese has been turned into the hero.
